On 16 December 2005, the Ontario Jewish Archives launched its newest exhibit "For King and Country: The Jewish Canadian Military Experience". The exhibit includes items such as: artifacts, photographs, letters, diaries, uniforms and cartoons drawn from the holdings of the OJA and the Jewish Canadian Military Museum. It was therefore a collaborative venture between the OJA & JCMM.
The launch was held at the Lipa Green Building and included over 30 veterans who arrived in uniform. The event began with speeches by David Engel, Chair of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, Al Rubin, President of the Jewish Canadian Military Museum and Brooky Robins, Chair of the Ontario Jewish Archives Committee. It was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony officiated by David Engel and Al Rubin. After the ceremony, the guests were invited to view the display, enjoy refreshments and schmooze. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event and felt that the display paid just tribute to the contribution and experiences of Canadian Jews who served in the military. Many of the guests were thrilled to see objects that they had donated or that belonged to their relatives included in the exhibit.
The following slide show includes images that capture the launch of the physical exhibit. This display will remain in the Lipa Green Building for one year, until December 2006. For more details about the physical display, please contact us at oja1@ujafed.org.
The remaining sections of this display include the virtual exhibit that the OJA produced in the spring of 2006. This display and our other exhibits are intended to offer viewers access to our displays from the convenience of their offices, schools and homes.
